Gov. Whitmer Signs Auto Insurance Reform Into Law – 9

Updated: Sep 20

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a historic bill Thursday.

The bipartisan auto insurance reform is now a law in Michigan.

The state House and Senate both passed the legislation last week.

Now, on the third day of the Mackinac Policy Conference, Governor Whitmer signed the bill that will lower rates and give drivers a choice in coverage.

This is really an example of divided government at work.

Lawmakers from both sides are calling this newly signed law a big win.

This new law gives drivers the option to choose their level of medical coverage on their car insurance, and it stops insurance companies from basing rates on non-driving related factor like credit scores, zip codes and gender.

The law also includes certain mandates to bring rates down.

Drivers will begin to see rate changes from this law beginning in July 2020.

Thursday afternoon, the governor will give her first keynote address as governor.
